Your moving checklist

Before you move

  • A Milwaukee mailing address can belong to a suburb with different services. Search it in the City’s property tool first.

    Search the address
  • Set up mail forwarding with the Postal Service.

    USPS change of address
  • Schedule We Energies service for your move-out and move-in dates.

  • Owners

Water Works bills the property owner. Update the account or ask questions at 414-286-2830.

  • Renters

Your lease says whether you or the landlord pays. The City bills the property, so the owner is responsible if a tenant doesn’t pay.

  • Leaving a Milwaukee home

Donate what you can. One cubic yard of bulky items can go out on your regular garbage day; more needs a paid special pickup or a drop-off center.

  • Leaving a Wisconsin rental

Leave a forwarding address. A Wisconsin landlord has 21 days to return a deposit or list deductions in writing.

  • Renters

Your landlord must give you at least 7 days to note damage that was already there. Keep a copy.

  • Carts go out by 7 a.m. on pickup day. Look up the new address and add the dates to your calendar.

    Look up collection days
  • Car owners

Street parking 2–6 a.m. needs a night permit for City residents. Until yours is set, free temporary permission covers 3 nights in 30 days. Check your new block’s side and winter rules.

    Permits and permission

In the first month

  • Wisconsin license or ID holders

WisDOT asks you to report a new address within 10 days of moving. A new card isn’t required.

    Change your address
  • Moving from another state

New residents apply within 60 days of moving here. If you bring a car, title and register it in Wisconsin. If the DMV mails an emissions test letter, the test is due within 45 days.

    New resident steps
  • Register at your new address on MyVote Wisconsin, then look up your new polling place.
